How To Drain Water From A Fully Automatic Washing Machine?

Step 1 – Turn Off The Power Supply

Switch off the washing machine and then remove the plug from the power-point. If you want to be extra careful, you can disconnect the power supply to the area where you keep the washing machine. Also, it is recommended to duct tape the power code so as to not disturb you while draining the water.

Step 2 – Locate The Drain Hose/Tube And The Drain Pump Filter

For Top Load Washing Machines –

A top load washing machine has only a drain hose; it does have a drain pump filter. The drain hose for a top load washing machine is found behind the appliance. So first, you need to move the machine away from the wall to locate it.

However, make sure that you do not push the washing machine too hard or fast since the hose can break. Before removing the drain hose, turn off the supply of water to the washing machine.

For Front Load Washing Machines –

Locating the same for a front load washing machine is a bit different since a front load washing machine drains water via two mechanisms. Certain front load washing machines only have one drain pump filter, which filters out both the waste and the water. While the other has both a drain pump filter to water and a drain hose to realize the water.

The drain pump filter and the drain hose are usually found in the bottom front of the washing machine. The access panel might be shut, so you will have to unscrew it or flip it down.

Step 3 – Draining The Water From The Washing Machine

For Top Load Washing Machines –

Before we start draining the water from the washing machine, we need to have a bucket ready. Now, you can disconnect the hose from the pipe and hold the hose up in the air. This is done so that the water in the tub does not flow onto the floor due to gravity.

Use a large shallow bucket so that you can bring the hose as low as possible. Place the hose right above the bucket, and then bring it down. Repeat this process till all the water is drained out. If the bucket fills up before water is completely drained, you can connect the hose back into the pipe and throw the water.

For Front Load Washing Machines –

If you use a washing machine with just a drain pump filter, place a towel and a large, shallow basket directly under the filter. So as you slowly turn the knob of the filter anti-clockwise, water pours into the basket. You can turn the knob clockwise if you want to stop the water flow and empty the basket.

If you are using a model with a drain filter and a hose, place the large, shallow basket under the drain hose. Remove the cap on the drain hose so that water flows into the basket. You can fix the cap back on to stop the water flow and empty the basket.

Step 4 – Remove The Clogging

First, check the drain hose for clogs. One way to check the drain hose for clogs is to check the speed of the water flow. If the water flows into the bucket slowly, but there is a lot of water in the washing tub, then you know that it is clogged somewhere.

To unclog the drain hose, push a plumber snake into the hose till you reach the clogged area. Turn the handles so that the plumber snake rotates through the clogged area. If the block is not in the drain hose, then check the drain pump for clogs. Remove this blockage using a pair of needle-nosed pliers and then reattach the hose.

You might also have to clean the filter using a soft-bristled brush (an old toothbrush also works) and hot or warm water for a front load washing machine.
